Certainly social issues can be fixed. And if they can’t be fixed, then they can still be improved.
Rape: On my campus there is a group of students looking at how to change policy around dealing with sexual assault. The project is funded through Status of Women Canada - a government funded feminist organization.
Sexism: We’ve come a long way with this one… and we still have a ways to go, where I think feminism can play a part. Yes, there is still lots of gender discrimination, and the fact that there is proves why feminism is still needed. I think you need to realize that it’s not always policies and issues that need to change, for the most part it’s attitudes. And if you want to sit idly by while millions of people are being oppressed due to the ignorance of others - go ahead. But I prefer to at least try to make a difference, and I do so by challenging people when they say sexist or racist or overall discriminatory ways. But if you want a concrete way to change that - education. Change the way that certain subjects are taught… actually teach sex-ed/health. Portray the real history of countries, not the fluffy savior peace keeping shit that is rooted in so many false assertion it’s ridiculous.
Racism: Dealt with this a bit in sexism… so just refer to the above.
Murder: Not necessarily a feminist issue… but I think that this once again goes back to my idea about challenging assumptions and attitudes.
I think that feminism encapsulates a lot more than people are willing to admit because they deem it negatively. I think as an act of solidarity it aligns itself with numerous groups and movements to bring forth change. Just look at Idle No More in Canada (an Indigenous movement in case you’re unaware). Look at changing sexual assault policies. Look at changing curriculum. Look at having equal pay for equal work. Look at how women are under the poverty line more than men. Look at how the media portrays rape and sexual assault.
Oh, that’s awkward… I just listed 6 things that feminism can fight for… and how can they be changed? By changing attitudes and education. I don’t think it necessarily has to be in policy, in legal forms. It can be, and it should be… and the only way that you can translate this issues is through activism and awareness raising. I think social issues can be fixed through policy changes and being more aware of the issues. Why haven’t we seen as much change? Because people are ignorant and don’t care. They don’t think they can create change. They don’t think that the causes are worth it because the only voices you hear are those of privilege… who don’t have to face oppression or marginalization.
people often claim that we no longer need feminism since feminist goals have been achieved. (ok, women can vote and have rights in many countries… but i personally believe feminism goes far beyond that… ANYHOO).
but people never claim that we no longer need neoliberalism because neoliberal goals have been achieved. or that we don’t need any other ideology since arguably all ideologies, to some extent, have seen success.
I think the concept of virginity was created by men who thought their penises were so important it changes who a woman is.
realist shit I have ever read.
